Altered Oceans

By UncategorizedNo Comments

The UNEP estimates there are 46,000 pieces of marine debris for every square mile of all the world’s oceans. […] Able to last indefinitely in seawater, plastics will continue to plague the Eastern Pacific long after new solutions have been adopted on land.

Altered Oceans multimedia article on L.A. Times. If you view only one video, let it be the second video of Part 4.

We really do not understand the amount of trash we produce. Chris Jordan tries to make it visible and understandable, though.

We are really raping this planet like there’s no tomorrow.

Life After The Oil Crash

By UncategorizedNo Comments

This must be one of the scariest websites I’ve seen in a long time. It tells about the life after the oil crash. Meaning when we have no more oil to rely on. Which will be pretty soon. The website just gives no hope at all.

This is “Energy Curve” of the history.

Soon, actually very soon we will run out of oil and return to the state of energy consumption which was happening before the 1920’s. But it won’t be like in the 1920’s because there are like three times more people in the world now and our society is totally dependent on oil. It will be catastrophic.

I totally recommend this website – take a moment and browse it through: Peak Oil – Life After The Oil Crash

Jackifique & Pacifique

JACKIFIQUE - the official pre-party

A very interesting weekend coming up.

On Friday Kuudes Linja will host the first Jack event of this year. I can’t say if it’s also the last before the summer – Orkidea’s tour, of which I wrote earlier, is taking loads of time and we’ll see if there’s enough time for April’s Jack event.
Anyway, Jack has a very nice lineup this time. I’ll be playing the warmup hours together with Orkidea, Erkko will take care of the peak hour and Juju will finish the night. Big variety of electronic house music will be served.
Jack is also the official pre-party of Pacifique, tickets only 4e with Pacifique advance ticket. Leave your swimsuits home for Saturday, though :)

On Saturday Pacifique will break loose at Serena Waterpark in Espoo. The line-up is massive including Jaakko Salovaara [JS16], Lowland piano concert, Kalle Miettinen [Dancemob Classics], Lil’ Tony [Redrum] & Tomi K [Ihana] feat. Stiliana, Danceteria All Stars: Mr A, Heikki L & Miika Kuisma feat. Max C and many more.

I’ll be playing an exotic chill-out set in the “From Rural To Urban” style in the sauna area of Serena. Thinking about the location I guess it won’t be that chilled out, after all… ;) But definitely it’s a good and welcome change after all those freezing winter outdoor gigs in the north.

See you on the weekend!

Mind Records catalog from 1996

Mind toinen etusivu

“Hot! Tip!”
I finally managed to upload the Mind Records catalog from 1996, which has been rotting on my archive drive for years already.

Do you still remember when you used to order the records browsing catalogs like this? You phoned to the shop and asked them to play you records you probably would like. And the guy in the shop left the phone next to the speaker and put the record on. And then you made your decision.

Boy, those were the times… We really rarely think how easy acquiring music has gotten. I should really remember that next time I’m whining about some bad user interface or slow connections on some random mp3 shop.

An ambient field mix

By UncategorizedNo Comments

Low Light Mixes has published a very nice ambient selection. The mix is mostly made out of field recordings and other recorded soundscapes. Very interesting, relaxing and surprisingly rhythmic.

The sounds range from a resonant pipe in a rain storm to foghorns to church bells to chanting to arrival anouncements to piano and an open window. I know that some field recordings may be interesting but not really listenable, not musical enough. I think this mix works pretty well & is easy to listen to.

DJ Orkidea’s Album Release Tour

By MainNo Comments

During the past months Oded, Asaf and me at Misc. Management together with DJ Orkidea have been organizing a full scale Album Release Tour for Orkidea’s upcoming second artist album. Those past months and weeks have been very busy and exciting and finally we have some news to publish.

The tour will go to 12 different cities. I’m happy of the outcome especially in Finland – we will have the best venues and the best local promoters supporting the tour. The co-operators abroad aren’t bad either including for example Gatecrasher Magna in England.

The tour will be better, bigger and – of course – more Web2.0. than ever. We are launching a YouTube channel which will feature video material shot by us – and you. You can also upload your favourite tour event photos to our photo service or send them via Flickr. There will be an ordinary blog of the tour but also a voice blog which will deliver the atmosphere from the most distant corners of Finland and the clubs – and the afterparties… ;)

I’m happy having a priviledge of DJing during the tour in a couple of venues. First, in the beginning of the tour in Rovaniemi and Vuokatti, then in Helsinki at the album release main event and later still in Tampere and Joensuu.

For me the most awaited ones would be the event in Rovaniemi – and returning to the north – the main event in Kaivohuone, the incredible views over Tampere from Hämeensilta, the much hyped Rytmikorjaamo in Seinäjoki and the season closing at Laserpoint main event.

Orkidea’s new album sounds awesome and I’m confident the live-performances will be outstanding. I’m really looking forward to see you all on the tour. More official information can be found on DJ Orkidea’s website.

Beatport sales limit question

By UncategorizedNo Comments

This is very interesting. Proton Music manager Jay Epoch tells Beatport has sent the following notification to all the labels selling music via their service:

“Any label that cannot produce $300.00 in GROSS sales each quarter will be put on a probationary status. If the label is unable to hit the $600.00 mark by the second quarter then that label will be cut from the Beatport system […] by increasing your promotions outside of the Beatport store and providing a consistent new release schedule we are confident that many of our low producing labels will be able to achieve the quarterly sales goal.”

If this if true, this means two things.

First of all, the huge amount of bad quality music will little by little vanish from Beatport. Finally – what we buy actually affects what they are selling. Very nice.

BUT there are loads of very good small labels, which probably will have problems selling enough music in order to stay in the store. In the worst case scenario this would mean that Beatport would end up selling just electronic music hits and supporting the major labels and we would need to find the rare gems elsewhere.
This must be the first time I’m mentioning the word “rare” when talking about digital music. I really hope they will find a good compromise between those two scenarios.

Tag a flyer.

By MainNo Comments

Probe, Helsinki, 1992

There’s a nice collection of Finnish Flyers and electronic music articles online on Flickr, say, over 1800 of them.

Now, we would need your help.

When you browse the collection, please add any describing tags to the flyers. Anything will do, names, years, cities, performers, designers etc…

That’s what makes the collection easier and more effective to browse and search. The more the tags, the better.

You need to be logged in in order to add tags.

And yeah, just searching is lot of fun. Try these or make your own searches:
Flyer oldskool Helsinki
Flyer miau
Flyer Turku
Flyer Labyrinth
Flyer Pussy

If you have any Finnish flyers or articles which you would like to be added to the collection, please let me know.

Vinyl Gets Its Groove Back

By UncategorizedNo Comments

Now it’s time for Time Magazine to write the same article which Wired (1, 2) and Yle wrote already months ago.

Still, 990,000 vinyl albums were sold in 2007, up 15.4% from the 858,000 units bought in 2006. Mike Dreese, CEO of Newbury Comics, a New England chain of independent music retailers that sells LPs and CDs, says his vinyl sales were up 37% last year, and Patrick Amory, general manager of indie label Matador Records, whose artists include Cat Power and the New Pornographers, claims, “We can’t keep up with the demand.”

Thanks, Thomas!

Big Thank Yous for all the support before and after the first Tiistain Tanssi-ilta. It was not an easy task to take over a slot which DJ Orkidea had hosted for nearly a decade and make changes to the concept which was very familiar to several listeners. I’m very happy of the huuuge amount of feedback, critique and support I got via Facebook, Klubitus, SMSs, emails, YleX feedback form and phone calls. Thank You for your time.

It’s good to see that so many of you have also voted of the best track of the latest show. It’s the feedback – and critique! – we need to make the show better and more interesting. I’m looking forward to hear from you in the future, too. Feel free to give tips of good electronic music news, suggest tracks and classics to be played or just let me know what you’re thinking.

See you on the radio waves on Tuesday, 22.01.2008.
