Curacao & Aruba

By UncategorizedNo Comments

First of all – here are the photos from Curacao & Aruba. If you’re in a hurry, check the best 15 photos, but in case you’ve got time, see them all.

Here are a couple of tips for those who are planning their trip to ABC Islands.

I don’t know did we just have bad luck with our pilots, but on both cross-atlantic flights with American Airlines we experienced something which would feel pretty impossible with airlines like Finnair. Just before starting to cross the ocean, the pilot says: “Hi folks… we might have a small problem here… It’s something to do with the meters… We are checking at the moment whether or not we can cross the ocean…”.
Ok, it’s cool that he lets us know if something is wrong – but it wasn’t even sure if there really is a problem. So why to tell this to the people on board and make them nervous?
Some time passes, and the pilot announces: “Hi again, folks… It seems we have the problem pretty well solved and we can leave the French airspace.”
I really would have slept much better the next 8-9 hours on board without knowing that they had a problem in the cockpit which they got “pretty well” solved.
Maybe it’s just a foreign attitude, but – as I said – it’s hard to believe hearing that kind of uncertain announcements from the cockpit on Finnair fights.

Anyway, we got to Curacao & Aruba alive and well. Here are the tips if you’ll ever travel there:

Stay at “Howard Johnson Plaza” at least a couple of nights. It’s not too expensive not not too fancy either, BUT nothing beats the location. Try to get a room with a view to Punda (the other side of Willemstad).

Visit Kura Hulanda museum to get a good historical overview of the island’s history of slavery.

Eat at El Toro, a nice-price restaurant with a large variety of different kinds of meat dishes. Spend an evening at Mondo Bizarro bar/restaurant at Punda. Probably the coolest atmosphere of all the restaurants on the island. Check the photos:

Restaurant Mondo Bizarro Restaurant Mondo Bizarro

Forget the evil tourist crowded beaches and head to north of the island in the morning and find a whole lagoon for yourself with white sand and incredibly clear waters for snorkeling.
Lagun in Aruba

Restaurant Pinchos

In Aruba, check Pinchos restaurant – less than one kilometer from Oranjestad centrum. Excellent service, good food and probably the best view of the island’s restaurants. Make sure to get a table before 18:00 and you’ll get a perfect sunset for starters :)

A good tip for people using traveller’s cheques: you can cash your cheques at any Casino on the island, without any extra commissions and with good exchange rates. The same doesn’t work in Curacao, though.

Arubiana Inn Arubiana Inn

Stay at Arubiana Inn at least for a couple of nights. The place is incredibly cosy, the owner is very nice and the location not bad at all. Compared to the horrible resorts everywhere, Arubiana Inn is a true gem among those. The prices are very nice, also if you rent snorkeling stuff or anything similar, you’ll get it cheaper than most of the places. The poolside is chilly and the 5,5e breakfast fills you up for sure. Only 19 rooms make sure you’ll get individual service, unlike those huge hotels.

The owner told us that in some of the big hotels the visitors pay up to 700-800e a night and end up lining up at 7a.m in the morning in order to get a sunchair on their private beach. What a vacation… And there they sit on their incredibly crowded private beach, unable to move anywhere and just 100m to the left or right you’d find kilometres of free beach. But without sunchairs. Or a bar. Or shower! That’s a reason to stay at your private beach. At least I’m happy they did :)

Probably the worst DRM ever

By UncategorizedNo Comments

This must be the worst DRM case we’ve seen in a long, long time. It sounds SO unreal I had to check a couple of other sources before posting it here.

“A person buys a new monitor, with the end result that Microsoft wants full access to all of his files on his computer, and Netflix wants to delete all media files bought from competitors.”

Think about it – there are people out there who get paid for designing this stuff…

The news for 2008

By MainNo Comments

After a 24hour flight with a medical emergency on board, Heathrow hell and lost luggage, I’m finally home again. Despite the long travel back, it was an awesome holiday – Curaçao and Aruba were amazing, it was damn hot and humid and incredibly relaxing. I should be posting a couple of photos to my Flickr account soon, in case you’re interested.

New Year’s starting with a big bang. I’ll be warming up at Danceteria’s & DTM’s New Year’s party tonight with Miika Kuisma. The other acts include DJs Mr.A, Heikki L, Orkidea and Miss Drag Queen 2007, Nikola. See Danceteria website for more info.

DTM & DANCETERIA PRESENT NEW YEAR 2008, front

From the beginning of 2008, I’ll be starting as a host of Tiistain Tanssi-ilta on YleX, the national radio 1. After ten years of radio career, DJ Orkidea leaves his position and I’ll be taking over.

During the first shows the concept will be fine tuned a bit. Most importantly, I want to make the provided electronic music scale wider in both genre- and timeline-wise. This will mean slightly more “easier” electronic music – nothing too poppy, but nothing too underground either.

I also want to provide other music than the tracks released during the past two weeks. Most DJs are watching the music scene with the eyes of DJs, not with the eyes of the public. Let’s face it – most of the tracks we consider already old, are totally unknown for the public. A couple of more plays could make a classic of several tracks which are just forgotten, because the DJs tend to think “everybody has this one already…”. Anyway, I think it’s a proper to introduce at least 1-2 old classic electronic music tracks per show. Some might say it’s nostalgic, I’d say it’s very educational. How little do we understand from today’s electronic music if we don’t know its past?

But before getting too deep, big thanks still to Leena and OlliS for the great possibility to join the team, to DJ Orkidea for all the years of Radio Unity/Tiistain Tanssi-ilta and to everyone of you for all the support I’ve gotten after the news were published. The first show is on Tuesday 8.1.2008, 21:00-22:00 Finnish time and from then on bi-weekly. Any comments, feedback, track requests etc. can be sent to me via this blog or email.

Orion's Podcast

Hello music lovers!

After these years of fine casts, rare and perfect guest mixes and nearly 15.000 downloads, Orion’s podcast is about to change. It’s not a matter of quitting but more like a change of the concept. I hope the upcoming changes are going to serve us all better, share the idea of high-quality electronic music and bring up new artists and new music for us all to support.

We still have two or three excellent guest mixes in the pipeline before the change, so stay tuned. I will announce more of the exciting news in the beginning of 2008. And most importantly – the change does not require any action from anyone who is already subscribed. And for those who aren’t, more podcast details can be found here.

Nokia & Universal offering unlimited music downloads

By UncategorizedNo Comments

Nokia, the world’s largest mobile phone handset maker by sales, Tuesday said it had joined forces with Universal Music to offer unlimited music downloads for a year on phones bundled with its new Ovi web services platform.

The service […] will allow users to keep the music after their yearly subscription charge expires.

Customers would receive a voucher giving them access to the free songs on the Nokia Music Store. Digital rights management [DRM] technology would prevent further copying.

Miksi maksaa?

By Uncategorized5 Comments

Viitaten aiempiin tässä blogissa käytyihin keskusteluihin (1,2,3,4,5,6), tähän kysymykseen kiteytyy koko tekijänoikeus-/maksukeskustelu DJ:n näkökulmasta:

Miksi musiikkia erittäin aktiivisesti ostavan, musiikkia sekä musiikkikulttuuria aktiivisesti promotoivan, artisteja ja niiden oikeuksia kannattavan ja musiikin kuluttajien ostopäätöksiin vaikuttavan DJ:n tulisi maksaa kahdelle suomalaiselle järjestölle (Teosto&Gramex) toiminnastaan yhtään mitään?

Teosto & NRJ-kauppa

By UncategorizedNo Comments

Teosto vastaa musiikkikaupan tiedusteluun. Ohessa tietooni saatettu kirjeenvaihto:

Asiakas (DJ) ottaa yhteyttä NRJ-kauppaan:

Hei!

Jos ostan NRJ-kaupasta tietyn kappaleen ja poltan sen CD-R:lle.
Kysymys teille kuuluu:
Saako tätä poltettua CD-R levyä käyttää DJ-keikalla, joka on täysin julkinen esiintyminen perus yökerhossa?
Olisi todella kiva tietää onko tämä laillista vaiko laitonta? Ymmärtääkseni poltettujen levyjen käyttö DJ-toiminnassa on kiellettyä? Vastaus tähän olisi kiva. :)

Terveisin,
XXXX

NRJ-kauppa ottaa yhteyttä Teostoon ja vastaa asiakkaalle:

Hei!

CD-levylle poltettuja kappaleita voi ravintolassa soittaa. Tarvittaessa kappaleiden laillisen lähteen voi todistaa kuiteista, jotka toimitetaan sähköpostiin ostoksen jälkeen.

Teostolta saimme seuraavanlaisen vastauksen:

“Meidän puolesta riittää, että kyseessä on laillinen lähde mistä biisit ostetaan. Tämä riittää yksityisen kopioinnin määrityksiin. Sen sijaan kun biisejä tallennetaan serverille omaksi soittolistaksi, jota esitetään julkisesti, muuttuu käyttömuoto yksityisestä julkiseksi. Ja jos tässä vaiheessa asiakas tekee omista, yksityishenkilönä ostamistaan biiseistä julkista esityskäyttöä varten oman listan ravintolan koneelle, tulee tästä maksaa tallennuskorvaus julkista käyttöä varten. Yhteys siis Teostoon Tuija Naulapäähän tai Asko Erikssoniin, p. 6810 1214/6810 1327 tai meilillä etunimi.sukunimi@teosto.fi. Korvaus taustamusiikin tallentamisesta on 0,10 eur/biisi, minimilaskutus 17 euroa (eli 170 biisiä mahtuu tähän minimihintaan).”

Ystävällisin terveisin

Asiakaspalvelu

Emailing Fuji

By UncategorizedNo Comments

I wrote earlier a long entry about FUJI F31fd. It’s been a wonderful camera and I’ve shot loads of pictures with it. A happy user, so to say.

However, video recording quality isn’t as good as it used to be on my old Fuji E550. Or not video recording, but audio recording on the video mode.
Even when I mailed Fuji and asked about this (check the comments of this entry), they told me that F31’s audio recording capabilities are exactly as good as E550’s.

Now is that so? Check these two videos after the jump:

Rhythm test

By UncategorizedNo Comments

Make a test: How well can you distinguish subtle differences in rhythm?

Recent research has emerged suggesting that rhythm perception and pitch perception deficits may be linked. Since it has long been known that people with poor rhythm perception abilities are often poor dancers, I though it would be interesting to make a test that would give an objective measure of rhythm perception.

Make the rhythm test here.
