Digitalizing the vinyls

By DJNo Comments

Ghost In The Vinyl

There’s one loong loong project ahead. Taking each of my vinyls on the turntable set next to my laptop, playing and recording them, normalizing the recording and tagging and archiving the mp3-files. Even if I would just record the most important records, this would take months. I was thinking to make the process a bit shorter, but I ended up having a software question in front of me.

I took the first step today and bought the cartridge which has been told to be the best one available for DJing purposes. No matter to which DJ-needle you compare Grado DJ200, the difference is huge. Check it yourself:

DJ Caro2 tested seven different DJ cartridges and recorded the test. Take a moment and listen the test. The last two loops are recorded with Grado DJ200 – the quality difference is mad. Here are the cartridges used in the test – you can hear each for about 10 sec.

Stanton 500al 1.8g (low weight)
Stanton 500al 3g
Stanton 680Hp 3g
Shure M35X 2g
Shure M44G 1.5g
Ortofon DJ E 3g
Ortofon Elektro 3g
Grado Dj200 3.4g (Technics SL-1200Mk5)
Grado Dj200 3.4g (Stanton STR8-80)

Now as I have the best possible cartridge, I would still need some good software to do as much work for me as possible. Basically the easiest and fastest way to digitalize the vinyls would be to record them to one file without breaks.

So – I need a program which will split this long audio file into separate tracks. Then I need a program which would normalize all these files as a batch.

After this is done, iTunes will take care of the wav-to-mp3 conversion and tagging.

I know there are several DJs and music lovers out there having the same project in their hands. Any software tips, hifi knowledge, experiences or opinions would be very welcome.

edit: Read further notes about the project.

One Minute Rave

By UncategorizedNo Comments

Here’s the announcement and the video of the One Minute Rave, held in Helsinki last Friday.

Did you know that the first Love Parade was organized by a group of friends, and it had a participation of less than a hundred people? And what happened… Now is your change to be a part of history in the making. Unity Posse is organizing the first ever One Minute Rave happening this Friday, that’s tomorrow (barely!). The rave will last from 18.00 to 18.01.

Mango, Kempten, Germany

Last night’s gig in Mango, Kempten, Germany was very, very nice. The people were extremely friendly and the atmosphere was very cosy. I truly enjoy playing in these 200+ clubs instead of big 1000+ halls. There’s so much more intimacy and interaction in the small ones.

What comes to music, the night proved (once again) the international potential of Danceteria label and Finnish (electro) house production scene. Tracks like My Rosegarden and a bit older Heikki L’s remix of Honey and Jussi Polet’s Positive etc were the tracks of the night, no question.

Big thanks to Alfredo & co. for all the promotion and work and the super nice staff of Mango for uncompromised hosting. Big up!

Teosto taipuu: nettiradiot samaan hintaan.

New website online and running

Layout ready

The new website is now online. Yes, it’s the one you’re watching right now.

After several hours of tweaking, I can’t help deeply hating CSS and IE6 combo. When everything was supposed to be ready, nothing was. Now the site works perfectly on latest Firefox, Safari3 and Opera, well on Safari2 and IE7 and on IE6 the layout sucks, but at least it works.

What’s new?

1. This feature I like the most: By adding a tag djorionweb_prods or djorionweb_gigs on your Flickr photos or YouTube videos, you can make them visible on this site – either on Gigs & Booking site or on Productions, depending on the tag.

2. On the main page there’s now the NEWS section. That’s basically the most important news from the blog. Dynamically, wheee :)

3. No more Podcast site, instead a larger site called Media. It includes the latest YouTube videos, Jaikus, feeds, links to the outside world and the Podcast, of course.

4. Productions site has been re-written, no more one million different flyers. If you want to see more flyer art, click on the photos on the right side of the page.

5. And yes, layout is new. Did I mention it already? ;)

I hope you enjoy the update.

Hallmark 16.06 tracklist

By Gigs, MainNo Comments

Hallmark was great, big thanks to Joonas, Lauri & co. for an invitation. Due to “Palms” theme and very nice summer weather, it felt more than appropriate to play more moody progressive house instead of trance.

New website coming up…

By Blogs & PodcastsNo Comments

The past days there has been some serious design work for the full upgrade of this website. Some of the current tasks include Flickr and YouTube intergration, some RSS-based content management and – finally – moving from Movable Type to WordPress.

Also, this website still has parts which are way over five years old. The structure includes tables, iframes and other not too modern web design stuff. Looking forward to a fully CSS-based layout.

But after all this tech talk, I’d like to hear if there’s anything what the current pages lack, any functionalities which should be added or something which simply doesn’t work at the moment. The better page we can make to serve your needs, the merrier :) Leave a comment or send some mail.
