Upcoming podcasts

By Blogs & PodcastsNo Comments

We have a very, very nice podcast spring coming up.

In the end of February, I’ll be casting a one hour progressive breaks mix. Early birds can catch a copy of it already on the LCS party in Turku, Finland, 24.02.2007 – the promoters are giving out 50 free CDs at the event.

Also some very good guests coming up. We’ll be having some oldskool progressive/trance on the podcast – as earlier :) But in addition, we’ll be bringing there some variety and sharing some grrreat funky breakbeat and electro house mixes.

In March – if everything goes as planned – we’ll be introducing one of the top DJs of Finland with a very rare live recording.

Check the podcast details or (if you have iTunes) subscribe directly here.

2006 look-back.

By Blogs & Podcasts, Civilian life, Entertainment, In EnglishNo Comments

To start the double-o-seven properly, I guess it’s time to sum up some of the moments of the past year.

Left Rovaniemi behind and moved to Helsinki. Getting a possibility of being part of Misc Management and working with some of the nicest guys in the southern electronic music scene has been more than delightful. The future looks exciting.

Got a possibility to travel a lot. Loved the Birkweiler wine fields. Saw Belfast, both sides of it.

Graduated. Wrote the Pro Gradu about Flyers in Electronic Music Culture.

After waiting for 11 years, finally saw Underworld live. Also enjoyed the Unity 10th Anniversary, both being the highlights of this year.

Finished remix of EBTG’s “Missing” and a remake of Innerself’s “Gautama”, released seven DJ-mixes and a couple of radio sets. Buried Worldwide Mix Selection podcast project and concentrated on DJ Orion’s podcast with a plenty of hi-quality guest mixes from Finnish artists.

Disliked Teosto and Gramex. Enjoyed some very good movies. Got sentimental while moving away from the north and couldn’t help looking back.

Experienced some very nice gigs such as Spinni in Tampere, Choon! in Turku, Rio88600 in Sotkamo and Sunburn in Kalajoki to mention just a few. Got new friends and got together with the old – humble, simple and honest people, who I – once again – just can’t give enough credit.

Made a new year resolution last year not to involve in any event production or promotion in spring 2006 – and got hands on way too many projects. Expecting the same to happen this year again.

A new guest mix on the podcast now available. DJ OlliS, a host of Tiistain Tanssi-ilta, an electronic music orientated radio show on Finnish National Radio 1 YleX delivers a very nice 45min session of oldskoolish trance. Just the sound we love to support on this podcast.
To get more information of the guy, see www.djollis.com.

To subscribe to the podcast, check here. If you have iTunes, try clicking here.

Rumours tell that Laserpoint starts their own 24h web radio on the 18th of November. On the opening day there should be an exclusive progressive house mix from DJ Orion containing tracks from artists like Gabriel & Dresden, Jaytech, PQM, D-Nox & Beckers etc…

Enough of namedropping. Misc Management sent today their first newsletter in ages. If you didn’t receive any and would just love to get the latest news directly from the Misc artist roster, feel free to send your email address to juska *a t* misc *d o t* fi and boom, you’ve subscribed.

Coming up: Automatic excuses

By Blogs & PodcastsNo Comments

The excuse for the lack of blog posts is that we’ve been busy with Misc2.0, the update of Misc Management website. The update is not yet there, but we’re getting closer every day…

And now a small teaser – it’s going to be very orange.

…uh …and besides that there’s also an updated supercool artist roster, new photos from various events, loads of mixes, brand new biographies, charts etc etc. Loads of interesting stuff to read anyways.

I started an automated blog entry via del.icio.us today. Every evening before midnight the recommended links of the day should be posted to the blog and all that – *drumfill* – automatically. What a wonderful world of the web.
But seriously – I have so little time during the day to post any interestingness here, but putting that to del.icio.us is just one click away. So these automatic posts should also sum up where I’ve (virtually) been during the day.

Miika Kuisma on Orion’s Podcast

By Blogs & PodcastsNo Comments

As always, we’re happy to announce the next Guest-DJ on Orion’s podcast: Despite being extremely busy with launching the new Danceteria label and making various tracks and remixes, Miika Kuisma somehow still had time to put together a very nice 45min progressive trance guest mix for the podcast.

To get it, make sure you’re subscribed – the instructions are here. The mix will be casted at latest tomorrow evening. Stay tuned…

The first news from Helsinki

By Blogs & Podcasts, Civilian life, In English, Music, Photos & VideosNo Comments

The week has passed incredibly fast. It’s been all about moving, doing the infamous vinyylijumppa to the second floor without any elevator and piecing together new furniture.

I guess carrying the music collection around was some sort of a last temptation to forget the vinyl, convert everything to CD-format and save your back from breaking before your 30th anniversary. I’m sure there was someone whispering to my ear “How much would that weight in mp3-format…?” when I climbed up the stairs with the 40kg vinyl cases.

Now after four full moving days quite much everything is done and we’ll be heading to Germany for nine days on Monday. I managed to finish most of the stuff on my todo-list despite the hurry:

First of all, after building up the new DJ-setup (which must be the best I’ve ever had what comes to sound and comfort) I recorded Spinni’s 10 Year Anniversary Mix. Spinni celebrates their ten year old way through the Tampere club history (more info here) and this “official” mix more or less describes the sound of the event’s second day. Techy progressive, breaks and trance in spirit of the oldskool, with a couple of fresh exceptions. Those who are subscribed to the podcast should get the mix any time soon, but you’ll find the link on the forums and Spinni’s website a bit later, too.

I visited Danceteria, DTM last night. Good way to get the first touch to Helsinki clubland – the place was crowded and atmosphere high. I shot restlessly a couple of photos while meeting new people and I have to say I felt pretty welcome – there were really nice people around.

Wait

The future looks bright. In October I’ll be heading to Northern Ireland for a week and before that I’ll hope to have some announcements to be made about some club and music related things. Oh, and nearly forgot – New York City based fitness radio station Exercise Radio starts to air some mixes of mine on their exercise related shows. It seems that vinyylijumppa isn’t the only way to get fit with vinyls ;)

And as a postscript: It’s never too late to start to love music. Or too early…
Heavy music has young fans...

DJ Thomas on the podcast and more upcoming mixes

By Blogs & Podcasts, In EnglishNo Comments

Orion’s podcast was updated a moment ago. A 45min guest mix from DJ Thomas should be on the computers of the subscribers pretty soon. Read more about the guest appearance of DJ Thomas (includes the instructions for subscribing, too)

Guest mix: DJ Thomas (Tornio, Finland)

hernan cattaneo & john tonks – sirocco (renaissance)
echomen – spirit (forensic)
4 tune 500 – dancing in the dark (house works)
redanka – out of the dark (whoop!)
nerva – arzamas-16 (whoop!)
josh gabriel – wave 3, charlie may’s undertow mix (nebula promo)

Enjoy :)

Currently making the last plans for collaborative mixtape with DJ Kaasi, I might be able to promise that it will be online by the end of this month.
I’m excited of the result – last time, in March 2005, we mixed 17 tracks together in 60 minutes. Now we might make it still a bit better. The speed is not the reason of excitement, though. Kaasi has a long background in house music – combining his tracks and style with mine produced already last time an interesting wholeness. Let’s see where it gets this time :)

Goodbye WMS

By Blogs & Podcasts, In EnglishNo Comments

First some sad news. I will stop hosting and casting Worldwide Mix Selections podcast.

Worldwide Mix Selections has been quite a successful project. After the 12th of December ’05 we’ve podcasted over 110 different mixes. Each of them has reached 200-400 subscribers. It’s been a nice way to show that there are SO many good deejays around sharing good music of which most of us hasn’t ever heard.

Anyway, I’ll concentrate from now on only on my private podcast on a monthly basis and leave WMS behind. Might be that there is someone who would like to continue the project but if not, the casts will stop in the near future.

New guest mix coming up

By Blogs & PodcastsNo Comments

Just a note: Mixes are fully functional and online again. Go grab them.

I just received a guest mix for the podcast from DJ Thomas. I have to admit that the quality of all these guest mixes has really surprised me. Most of them have been made by DJs from Northern Finland which just tells about the huge potential of the region. Every guest mix has also its roots in progressive/trance music which would make one to expect cheesy vocal bigroom tracks – but no: every DJ has really shown that progressive/trance music is still vital and so much more to offer than these top XX chart tracks.

DJ Thomas’ mix makes no exception. According to him, it’s a tribute to the older Renaissance sound: a melodic combination of house, progressive and trance. DJ Thomas has gained reputation in the Jyväskylä/Joensuu area but lives nowadays in Tornio, Northern Finland. He really has eye (or ear:) on quality trance and nice collection of sound which you easily could call oldskool these days. His mixes are more or less rare, so it’s more than nice to receive an exclusive one for this podcast.

Now, subscribe to the podcast and sit back. The new guest mix will be casted any day now.

Klubitus offline and some of the mixes, too.

By Blogs & PodcastsNo Comments

Some of the DJ-mix content on this site may be offline due to the disk failure at Klubitus.org. The problem should be fixed in the beginning of the next week.

I’ll be spending my last “holiday” this summer for the next four days. By the lake, far from everything. This is how it looks like:

Aki A’s guest mix on the podcast

A 45min excellent trance set mixed by Aki A from Turku is now available via Orion’s Podcast. The mix is made exclusively for this cast and contains some true gems. One of the best trance mixes I’ve heard lately.

Subscribe to the podcast and make your own judgement.

Download problems?

By Blogs & Podcasts, In English, MusicNo Comments

Every now and then I hear complaints that someone is unable to download the mixes on this site.

The most common problems are:
1) When left clicked, the link does not save but opens a new Firefox window and starts to play.
2) When saved directly (Save Target As), the mix is saved as a kuuntele.php file.

Here are the solutions:
1) Check how your browser handles the mp3-files. You can change the Download Actions in Firefox easily: Preferences => Downloads => Download Actions
1.2) If this does not solve the problem, just left click the link and let it open in a new window. The mix starts to play. Select File => Save Page As. Now you can download the mix and close the window.
2) If you rather right click and save the file as “kuuntele.php”, make sure you rename the file afterwards. Anything with an ending “.mp3” will do. All the mixes on this site have full ID3-tags so they will show up correctly in your iTunes or Winamp, no matter what the file name is.

Introvert’s Chillout mix podcasted

By Blogs & PodcastsNo Comments

In case you haven’t subscribed yet, there’s a very, very nice chillout mix by Introvert available on Orion’s podcast. Introvert is without doubt one of the most talented producers in Northern Finland (living in Helsinki at the moment, though). Getting an unreleased chillout mix from him for the podcast is more than nice – this is perfect music for the northern summer nights when the sun’s never going down…

Jos RSS-feedit ovat tuttua kauraa, ole hyvä ja päivitä tämän blogin feed ajan tasalle. Uusi osoite on: http://feeds.feedburner.com/OrionBlog

No, viimein moiseen näyttäisi olevan kohtuullisen yksinkertainen ratkaisu:

Yläpuolella näkyy kolme laatikkoa, joista jokainen edustaa yhtä ylläpitämääni palvelua: tätä blogia, DJ-podcastiani ja yhdessä ystävieni kanssa pyöritettävää Worldwide Mix Selections -podcastia. Kirjoittamalla palvelua vastaavaan laatikkoon sähköpostiosoitteesi alat saada kyseisen blogin tai castin tuoreimmat jutut sähköpostiisi automaattisesti. Mailiin putoavat siis viimeisimmät kirjoitukset tästä blogista tai linkit tuoreimpiin podcast-miksauksiin ja raitoihin, välittömästi niiden ilmestyttyä blogiin. Helppoa.

Podcast news.

By Blogs & Podcasts, In EnglishNo Comments

At the moment Worldwide Mix Selections -podcast serves a nice ’99-’01 trance mix by DJ Thomas. The mix is already 4-5 years old, but it hasn’t lost a bit of that original feeling. Not so usual for trance mixes these days, huh?
After casting LOTS of house music, WMS is now concentrating on other genres for a while. There are SO many good progressive, drum’n bass, techno, trance and chill-out etc.etc.etc mixes around, it’s just a matter of finding (and podcasting) them. Suggestions for new mixes are always welcome.

After two nice guest mixes from Loopy and San Mejor (thanks, guys!) DJ Orion’s podcast casts now Dead End, the latest mix of the author himself. Expect new stuff appearing shortly, one 30min mix and one full-lenght trancey mix coming up.

If you clicked those links, you might have noticed that the podcast section has now been improved. The subscribing should be now easier than ever. But just in case, here are the direct links to iTunes:

MySpace

By Blogs & Podcasts, DJNo Comments
