Real Scenes is a series of films, supported by and conceived with Bench, in which we explore the musical, cultural and creative climate within electronic music’s key destinations. We’ll look at the role singular figureheads—producers, DJs, promoters—play in making their city’s music scene a point of world-wide interest. We’ll also look at places, spaces and inspirations, seeking out the essence of what gives these hyper-local scenes a truly global resonance.
Berlin has always been a special place, and especially so when it comes to electronic music. When the Berlin Wall came down in 1989, techno became the underground soundtrack to the reunion between East and West. In recent years, it’s become an international destination for ravers—a cheap place to party with clubs that are renowned throughout the world.
Techno has become a business in the meantime. Yet Berlin still maintains a credibility that other cities lack. To understand why, RA and Bench have teamed up for another edition of Real Scenes. We went to the German capital eager to find out about its unique history and the reasons behind its continued relevance.

DJ Orion @ YleX – 02.09.2011 – Suomi-special – XmiX: Ferry Corsten
Syyskuun perjantai-illat startataan YleX:llä isolla kattauksella. Perjantaina 02.09. DJ Orionin ensimmäisellä tunnilla otetaan katsaus tämän hetken kotimaiseen klubisoundiin. Suomi-specialissa soitossa ainoastaan Suomi-artistien tuoreita raitoja, esittelyssä niin uudet tulokkaat kuin vanhat studiojäärätkin. Soitossa mm. Lenno, Timo Juuti, Hector87, K-System, Labtracks, Michael Cassette, Joonas Hahmo, Tom Fall, Alex Kunnari, Super8&Tab, Mystery Islands, Muffler ja Detuned.
Samassa yhteydessä julkistetaan viime viikolla käynnistyneen Super8&Tab-skaban voittajat sekä jaetaan muutama lippu tuleville Illusions-klubin syntymäpäiville Helsingin Nosturiin.
XmiXissä kuullaan maailman trancekärkinimiin kuuluvan Ferry Corstenin haastattelu ja eksklusiivinen miksaus. Ferry kertoi haastattelussa mm. hardcore-menneisyydestään ja tämän hetken väleistään maanmiehiensä Arminin ja Tieston kanssa. Ferry saapuu keikalle Helsingin Circukseen 17.9.

DJ Orion päättää elokuun perjantaitanssit livenä Berliinistä 26.8. Kakkostunnin tuttuihin XmiX-dekkeihin tarttuu tech-housen ihmemies ja Helsingin aamubileiden vakikasvona kunnostautunut DJ Flink. Flink soittaa säännöllisesti viideltä aamulla alkavissa jatkobileissä ja on noussut yhdeksi tämän hetken kiinnostavimmista suomalaisista tech-house- ja teknonimistä. Klo 23 alkaen saadaan maistiaisia virallisesta jatkobilesoundista.
DJ Orion starttaa ensimmäisellä tunnilla Super8&Tab-kilpailun, jossa on jaossa kaksi kappaletta herrojen uunituoreita remixalbumeja ja pakettiin laitetaan mukaan myös alkuperäiset Empire-debyyttialbumit.
Soitossa lisäksi mm. K-Systemin uuden Kimble K -projektin tuore sinkku, vastavalmistunutta Michael Cassettea sekä tarkastelussa ensi kuussa XmiX-artistiksi saapuvan saksalaisen Dennis Sheperdin sekä japanilaisen Shingo Nakamuran debyyttialbumit.

This weekend sees most likely the biggest club event of the year in Vaasa and its surroundings. Fantasia, held now for the second time, lands to Tropiclandia, Vaasa’s indoor spa with a massive lineup of 17 DJs and live acts and 3 separate stages.
Last year some 600-700 people showed up, but now it seems the word of 2010 event’s amazing vibe has done its thing and this year’s Fantasia will be sold out to its full capacity, 1200 people.
While choosing your bikinis, speedos or Borat-style trousers, it’s good to warm up by checking some photos from last year or even some video footage shot at the event. Here’s my tracklist from last year’s partiee, too.
I’ll be playing the second last set at the main stage, after the almighty K-System who has promised to try (literally) some stagediving and before Syna who will be finishing the night. I’m really looking forward to give the first plays to a couple of brand new re-edits as well as Michael Cassette’s remix of Orion & J.Shore’s The Night After.

Perjantaina 19.8. DJ Orion starttaa jälleen viikonlopun kahden tunnin klubimusapläjäyksellä. Poikkeuksellisesti XmiX-osuus jää pois, mutta tilalla kuullaan Berliinistä viikonlopuksi Helsinkiin palanneelta herralta koko myöhäisen perjantai-illan mitalta uutta musiikkia Suomesta ja maailmalta.

YleX:n XmiXissä kuullaan perjantaina 12.08. eksklusiivinen livenauhoite tämän kesän Provinssirockista. Festareilla yleisöä villinnyt jenkkiartisti DJ Shadow antoi YleX:lle luvan settinsä alkuosan nauhoittamiseen ja esitteli DJ-taitojaan uusien raitojensa kera sekä villillä hiphopista drum’n’bassiin ulottuvalla selektiollaan. Katso myös video DJ Shadown keikan alusta.
DJ Orionin ensimmäisellä tunnilla lautasilla mm. Ralphie B, Joonas Hahmo, Olav Basoski, Above & Beyond, Dinka, Protoculture, Arty, Viikon Vinyyli ja Viikon Uutuus.
