Impulse returns after a long break to celebrate its six year birthday this Saturday. The event truly has an eclectic lineup, including house, progressive, trance, psy-trance and hard-nrg. Combining such an amount of styles reminds me from the old days when club events (or raves) were advertised as electronic music events, rarely mentioning only one style or music genre on the flyer.
Lahti also has a strong history as a city of hardstyle music events and I’m expecting the party get totally loose when the BPMs go up.
I’ll be playing between Anton Sonin & AMX and Poliisi, 23:00-24:00. See you on the dance floor :)

Bad news. Club Diiva event in Åbo Diskotek, Turku has been cancelled due to the financial problems of the venue. This is a very sad situation, not only because it’s the first gig I’ve ever needed to cancel during the past ten years, but also knowing that the promoters are super nice and I’d never wished something like this to them. This is already the second club night in Turku suffering of sudden cancellations during this autumn, I’m hoping this won’t become a trend.
My best wishes to all Turku clubbers and Diiva possé – I hope we can make the event happen in the near future.
Our local hero Heikki L has opened a new website. Nice flash layout and cool features, but for heavy users an RSS feed wouldn’t do any bad. I’ve been a couple of very rocking videos from Heikki’s gigs – why aren’t they on the site? Add some interaction like a shoutbox or guestbook and I would be satisfied. My five cents :)

YleX:n Tiistain Tanssi-illan biisivieraana 11.11.2008 Turusta maailmaa valloittamaan lähtenyt Michael Cassette -duo. Artistinimen takaa löytyvät Matti Heininen ja Erkka Lempiäinen ovat tuottaneet musiikkia myös Komytea ja Squash’84 -aliaksilla ja keikkailleet ympäri maailmaa mm. AnjunaBeats-levymerkin tapahtumissa. Michael Cassettelta kuullaan Tanssi-illan Biisivieras-osuudessa vielä julkaisematonta tuotantoa.
Biisivieras Tiistain Tanssi-illassa joka toinen viikko. DJ Orionin tunnilla klo 21-22 esittäytyvät vieraat kuuluvat Suomen elektronisen musiikin artistien kärkikaartiin ja tuovat ohjelmaan oman musiikillisen antinsa esittelemällä valitsemansa biisin.

Prodigy’s new album is now ready. 11 tracks and the name is Invaders Must Die. No guest vocalists, but Dave Grohl appearing.
From Liam’s update note:
“its a band album mostly so we can play all the tunes live if we want. didnt want to have any guest vocalists on this record even though we did do 3 collabs but they didnt feel part of this record — they may come out later. dave grohl plays on run with the wolves, what a top lad he is . he approached me and we pulled that tune out the bag at last minute, fast ferocious tune with evil big electronic riff with keef on vocals.”
Kauan odotettu Gramexin DJ-sopimuksen uudistus on julkaistu.
Pähkinänkuoressa homma toimii näin:
– Jos soitat kokonaan digitaalisesti (esim. Serato Scratch ja vastaavat), maksat vain Gramexille tietyn listataksan.
– Jos ostat mp3:sia ja poltat ne CDille, maksat Gramexin lisäksi myös Teostolle.
– Jos rippaat vanhat vinyylisi CD:lle tai muuhun muotoon, maksat Gramexin lisäksi myös Teostolle.
– Jos lopetat maksamisen Gramexille, tulee sinun 24h kuluessa tuhota kaikki lisenssin piirissä olleet kappaleet: “Vuosilisenssin voimassaolon päätyttyä ei sen nojalla lisenssoituja ja valmistettuja tallenteita saa enää käyttää ja tallenteet tulee hävittää vuosilisenssin päättymispäivän kuluessa.”
– Jos käytät Seratoa ja sinulla on käytössäsi 3000:n raidan lisenssi, joudut raportoimaan käytössäsi olevat kappaleet Gramexille: “Valittaessa lisenssimalli DJ–D (3000 uraa), tulee käytettävät ja kopioitavat äänitteet ja niiden urat raportoida yksilöidysti Gramexille.”

Hyvää päivää. Eikö DJ-sopimuksen uudistamisen pitänyt tuoda Gramex 2000-luvulle? Olisi hauska tietää, kuinka moni DJ ryntää nyt tekemään 3000 raidan sopimuksen ja kirjoittaa tarvittavat tiedot kolmestatuhannesta raidasta. En lisäksi löytänyt mistään tietoa, kuinka ko. sopimus päivitetään; Tarvitseeko joka kerta musiikkia ostettaessa eritellä Gramexille ostettujen uusien biisien tiedot?
iTunes ja monet muut digitaaliset musiikkikaupat eivät tarjoa lähellekään tarvittavia tietoja kappaleista, joten homma on melkoinen. Teen aina Tanssi-illan yhteydessä jokseenkin samanlaisen raportoinnin 10-12 kappaleesta, johon kuluu aikaa noin puoli tuntia. Karkeasti arvioituna 3000 kappaletta vaatisi 150 tuntia eli lähes 19 täyttä työpäivää.
Vaikka Gramex ja Teosto ajavatkin eri asioita, on siinä (DJ:n ja musiikin esittäjän mielestä) yksi etujärjestö liikaa. Gramexissa ei näytä olevan oikeasti teknologian ja DJ:n arjen näkökulmasta ajan tasalla olevia päättäjiä ja Teosto kerää jo musiikin esittämisestä tuloja moneen otteeseen. Tällainen käytäntö on ainutlaatuinen ainakin Euroopassa. Yksinkertainen kysymys edelleenkin kuuluu: miksi maksaisin tästä?

Joonas Hahmo. One of the most promising Finnish acts, Joonas is definitely the man of the moment. Not playing too often in Helsinki, Joonas takes the final slot to end the night with a style. And yes, good news just in – Joonas will soon perform his first live gig at this year’s Pacifique event.

“It was after a gig in Slovenia during the summer of ’06. I DJed at an outdoor party and I distinctly remember removing a piece of gaffer tape that was stopping the master level going any higher. I took it off and boosted the level to the max because I was playing really quiet, un-mastered track that needed some extra power. After that I just left it up and forgot about it, such was my drunken state. The monitors must have been blasting extra loud, not to mention the PA. I went straight to an afterhours club and played another set, where I stayed until the early morning. When I left, I remember thinking my ears were ringing more than usual, but didn’t really care because this was normal after a gig and the ringing always stopped the next day. When I woke the next afternoon I could still hear the ringing, but still assumed it would soon pass, however, the next day it was still there. And the next day… By this stage I was starting to get a little anxious and I was beginning to pay a lot of attention to the sound in my head.”

Infected Mushroom hits Helsinki for the third time this Saturday. The party will be held at Suvilahden Voimala, which has also been the home of Flow Festival in the past years. The main act will be supported by quite a bunch of domestic DJs including Eliot Ness, Milla Lehto, Indigo, Casper and several more. I’ll be starting up the madness at the main floor with a laid-back prog/psy/technoish set, see you there!

Jack is back after a short break, turning five and being as nasty and stubborn yet adorable as a five-year-old can be. The fifth anniversary birthday guest is Jody Wisternoff from the Way Out West fame, one of my early musical heroes and a guy who still keeps delivering. His podcast is a great example of his wide music taste and abilities as a DJ, make sure to subscribe :) The domestic sound of the night will be taken care by the long-time Jack residents DJ Orkidea and Lil’Tony.
