Hallmark was great, big thanks to Joonas, Lauri & co. for an invitation. Due to “Palms” theme and very nice summer weather, it felt more than appropriate to play more moody progressive house instead of trance.

Despite of everything what I heard about the comfort of playing at Uniq, the sound was pretty good after all. Ok, I have to admit that I had to have the monitors awfully loud to be able to be 100% sure of what I was doing. Better located monitor speakers would do a lot for that place from the DJ’s point of view. Anyway – the place was more crowded than on earlier wednesdays and music wasn’t that trance as I expected. Matthew Heath and Anton Sonin kept playing pretty housey material before me, so I delayed playing the progressive/trance tracks, too and chose a bit more electroish start.

For a flyer freak like me, it was fun to get a copy of Club Unity’s latest flyer. The flyer itself is a DVD disk which contains a video of Unity’s past – 10 years of parties.

The week has passed incredibly fast. It’s been all about moving, doing the infamous vinyylijumppa to the second floor without any elevator and piecing together new furniture.
I guess carrying the music collection around was some sort of a last temptation to forget the vinyl, convert everything to CD-format and save your back from breaking before your 30th anniversary. I’m sure there was someone whispering to my ear “How much would that weight in mp3-format…?” when I climbed up the stairs with the 40kg vinyl cases.
Now after four full moving days quite much everything is done and we’ll be heading to Germany for nine days on Monday. I managed to finish most of the stuff on my todo-list despite the hurry:
First of all, after building up the new DJ-setup (which must be the best I’ve ever had what comes to sound and comfort) I recorded Spinni’s 10 Year Anniversary Mix. Spinni celebrates their ten year old way through the Tampere club history (more info here) and this “official” mix more or less describes the sound of the event’s second day. Techy progressive, breaks and trance in spirit of the oldskool, with a couple of fresh exceptions. Those who are subscribed to the podcast should get the mix any time soon, but you’ll find the link on the forums and Spinni’s website a bit later, too.
I visited Danceteria, DTM last night. Good way to get the first touch to Helsinki clubland – the place was crowded and atmosphere high. I shot restlessly a couple of photos while meeting new people and I have to say I felt pretty welcome – there were really nice people around.
The future looks bright. In October I’ll be heading to Northern Ireland for a week and before that I’ll hope to have some announcements to be made about some club and music related things. Oh, and nearly forgot – New York City based fitness radio station Exercise Radio starts to air some mixes of mine on their exercise related shows. It seems that vinyylijumppa isn’t the only way to get fit with vinyls ;)
And as a postscript: It’s never too late to start to love music. Or too early…

Järjestelyt pelasivat esimerkillisesti ja kokonaiskuva jäi erittäin positiiviseksi. Mitäpä muuta tosin olisi odottanutkaan :) Volume oli laitettu hyvännäköiseksi ja lämppärisetti oli erittäin mukava soittaa. Soitin alussa vähän tummempaa tribal/proge-vaikutteista soundia ja sieltä muutaman tunnelmoinnin kautta vähän melodisempaan ja ajavampaan nykytranceen.
Suuri kiitos Pi:lle – sain häneltä käsiini muutamia vanhoja flyereitä Helsingistä ja Rovaniemeltä. Vanhat flyerit Helsingin tapauksessa tarkoittavat vuosia 1992-1993 ja Rovaniemen tapauksessa oldskool on vuosissa 1996-1998. On hauska nähdä, miten flyeritaide on vuosien mittaan muuttunut – ja ennenkaikkea miten tapahtumia ja artisteja on markkinoitu aiemmin.
Jos siis flyeritaide kiinnostaa sellaisten klubien ja tapahtumien kohdalla kuin Destroit, Union, Airave, Temple, Members of Mayday tai Rovaniemen kohdalla House Delight, Sonic Warehouse, White House, Monttu, Flow jnejne, niin tsekkaa allaolevat linkit.

Eilinen Hallmark oli jokseenkin yhtä huikea kokemus kuin etukäteen aavistelinkin. Vaikka monet usein vähättelevät warm-up -settien merkitystä ja soittomielekkyyttä, oli La Tourin ensimmäinen parituntinen mitä mukavin soittaa. Sai itse määrätä tahdin ja rauhassa kehitellä iltaa progressiivisen soundin kautta teknoon ja lopulta puhtaasti tranceen.
Alkuillasta väkeä kerääntyi yllättävänkin paljon tanssilattian reunoilla olevien tiskien taakse vilkuilemaan. Tuntui, että jos soittamassa olisi ollut kuka tahansa pääkaupunkiseudun tuttu DJ, väki olisi liikahtanut lattialle hetimiten. Nyt kuitenkin ilmassa oli tiettyä varauksellisuutta enkä varmaankaan ole kovin väärässä, jos väitän monen kuunnelleen korva tarkkana Rovaniemeltä saapuneen DJn selektiota ja tekniikkaa.
Olin varautunut soittamaan useamman uuden ajavan teknoraidan (Dutch Liquid, Christian Varela jne), mutta tunnelma vaikutti olevan klubin teeman mukaisesti vahvasti tranceen virittynyt. Hieman ajavamman Lostit.comin Animalin ja uuden Narayan-remiksin yllättävän vaisun vastaanoton jälkeen päätin jatkaa melodisemmalla materiaalilla ja viimeinen vajaa tunti toimikin täydelle tanssilattialle erittäin hyvin.
Vaikka pohjoisen keikoille ominainen raaka ja itsevarma miksaustyyli jäikin tällä kertaa studiomiksausten tekemiselle ominaiseksi pikkuviilaamiseksi, antoi Hallmark-visiitti reilusti itseluottamusta ja varmuutta muunmuassa tulevaa Koneisto-keikkaa ja Time Tunnelin Jimi Tenorin ja Altern8:n tähdittämän pääsalin hostausta varten. Omalla kohdalla ne lienevät loppukesän odotetuimmat keikat Saksasta paluun jälkeen.
